Friday Random Ten – The “One Week and Then Finals” Edition

I’m excited to see this semester end, although I probably won’t be excited to get my final grades report. One bad semester was bound to happen.

I have a statistics exam this afternoon and after that one research paper to compile. It’s for Feminist Theory and I think I’ll focus on feminism in Poland. The paper isn’t due until the 15th, but we have to give “presentations” on what we’ve found next week. I argued with our professor yesterday about this — some of us wouldn’t get started on the paper until a few days before, so what information would we be presenting? That of course was met with a cocked eyebrow in my direction, and a stern statement that we should have at least a rough draft by next week. I in turn cocked my infamous eyebrow and said we’ll see what we all manage to bring in to talk about a week before the paper is due. I was in a mood.

Next week is Dead Week and I’ll probably have one more statistics assignment, light reading (minus the research), and then finals week will be upon us. I have one paper and three exams that week, which really isn’t that bad, and then we have close to a month until the start of next semester. I’ve really hated this semester and that’s a pity because I’m paying for it.

Enough of my whinning and on with the music.

It’ll be over and done with soon. My last final is on the 19th, and I’m counting the days, baby! Actually, the week of the 5th is my last week of classes then we have almost a month off before we go back in January.

What are you getting your degree in?

My major is Sociology and I’m minoring in Women’s Studies. Sociology is my love, but women’s studies helps to give me the perspective particular to women that is shamefully lacking in sociology. Four years and all I’ve been studying are dead white guys. I am so glad I chose WS as a minor, otherwise I’d be going crazy in my soc classes asking, “Where are all the women sociologists?!” “Where is the feminist analysis?!”

If I can survive undergrad, I may head into graduate studies…

I’m sort of stuck right now because I’m not sure what I’d like to do. With the BA degree I may find work in the social work field or get with an organization, but I do not really have an interest in those at this point. I could go to graduate school with the aim of being a professor or an academic for the rest of my life… or branch out and do my own research and publish. Or, none of the above.

Right now my interests are all over the place. I haven’t been able to focus on any one thing.

My life, summed up in one small sentence.

I think it describes many people — or so I think until my classmates start talking about how they’ve known what they’ve wanted to do since the age of 5. Bah.

  5. 5
    Nio says:

Those who have known since they were five are few and far between. I was refering to ADD and how I live with it.

  6. 6
    Anne says:

Ah. I do not have much experience with ADD and related, nor have I ever been tested for any such thing. Although, when I took some Ritalin once I was able to focus and zipped right through writing a paper.

So far it’s only my studies that I’m unable to focus on, and I attribute that partially to my disinterest in a lot of the courses I’m required to take.

    Nio says:

For me, Ritalin is a tool to get things done. It is not, however, a tool to do things well. So I have a choice: do it or do it well. And that’s a sucky choice to have to make.

Hopefully a better alternative will be found in the coming years.

    Nio says:

Hopefully. Ritalin takes my creativity and puts it aside. I just hate having to take it. And it keeps me awake at night, gives me anxiety, and makes me generally intollerable.
