And I Thought Knitting Hurt
Or, Three Kinda-Related Things Involving Pain of Some Sort:
ONE
My ‘ukulele arrived yesterday afternoon!
I purchased an entry-level Kala mahogany soprano uke, with better strings and some accessories, from MusicGuyMic over at eBay. He came highly recommended via every single uke message board I’ve been stalking for the past month. If it goes well, I’ll definitely upgrade to either a Flea or a Fluke. I’ll give it a year.
My left-hand fingers are already developing blisters and I sort-of know a few chords. My only problem is that I’m double-jointed in all of my fingers (and thumbs), so I have to be really conscious of how I’m bending my fingers.
I’ve never had so much trouble due to my fingers. The two other problematic-but-manageable areas are writing (the first joint on my index finger bends 90° so I need thick pens) and my mother-not-in-law’s push-up lighters which, because my thumbs also bend so far, I can’t really operate.
Speaking of lighters:
TWO
I’M QUITTING SMOKING.
SERIOUSLY THIS TIME.
When I wake up tomorrow morning, I will be a Recovering Smoker.
Because:
THREE
I’m having ORAL SURGERY tomorrow morning.
Yay.
Granted, #2 won’t involve as much pain as #3, and #1 may end up hurting worse than #2, but, #2 will still hurt psychologically and unlike #3, I can’t be put under until it passes. And we all know it’s the psych stuff that’ll screw you up the most. But hey! It’s better than cancer!

I hope you feel better and you are quitting smoking? Who am I going to bum from now? I say you give me your cig maker and I will keep it for the social occasions. haha miss you.
Damn, good luck with your surgery. Is it a direct result of smoking? Let me know how it goes.
@Vicki: Thanks for your well wishes. I’m afraid I’ve already given the maker away; the only remnants of smoking I have left are ashtrays. You can be a Recovering Social Smoker with me, though!
@Aaron: Thanks for the luck. It seems to have gone well, although it’s a bit unnerving when the surgeon says he had to “really dig” for the tooth. The surgery was NOT due to smoking; I had an impacted tooth that needed to come out before I start Invisalign treatment in a few weeks.
smoking is gross. I’m so glad you gave it up. For me, smoking was a location thing. Once I got out of Lafayette, it was easy to stop. Something about that town just made me want to kill myself I guess.
Right now it’s probably hard. But I promise it gets way easier. You’ll feel better (if you don’t already) physically and mentally. AND you’re not giving any more of your money to those evil tobacco corporations!
How is the post-oral-surgery thing going? I gave up and smoked within hours, which is why I ended up with dry sockets. Yay!
And speaking of which, the non-smoking thing? Success?
We need to hear some ukulele tunes! We can record in the studio downstairs!
I haven’t seen her smoke, so I think it is going really well.
She hasn’t bled from the mouth in a while, so I think the mouth is pretty much healed. Plus, we haven’t had to make whipped potatoes or purchase large quantities of yogurt.
Anne, we havent talked and I miss you! How is everything? Why havent you written? xoxox

@Kyle: You’re right, smoking is gross.
As an aside, but related: every time I hear or use or think of the word “smoking”, I think about something I read a year or so ago. I think it was by Jensen.
He was musing on how we call it “smoking” and the people “smokers”, when in reality it is the thing–the cigarette–which is doing the smoking and the people are merely sucking—and should therefore be more appropriately called “suckers”.
