“Our President, Ourselves!”
Robin Morgan has an excellent essay posted at The Women’s Media Center regarding the Clinton/Obama debates, Goodbye To All That (#2).
Goodbye to the double standard . . .
[...]
Goodbye to the toxic viciousness . . .
Carl Bernstein’s disgust at Hillary’s “thick ankles.” Nixon-trickster Roger Stone’s new Hillary-hating 527 group, “Citizens United Not Timid” (check the capital letters). John McCain answering “How do we beat the bitch?” with “Excellent question!” Would he have dared reply similarly to “How do we beat the black bastard?” For shame.Goodbye to the HRC nutcracker with metal spikes between splayed thighs. If it was a tap-dancing blackface doll, we would be righteously outraged—and they would not be selling it in airports. Shame.
Goodbye to the most intimately violent T-shirts in election history, including one with the murderous slogan “If Only Hillary had married O.J. Instead!” Shame.
Goodbye to Comedy Central’s “Southpark” featuring a storyline in which terrorists secrete a bomb in HRC’s vagina. I refuse to wrench my brain down into the gutter far enough to find a race-based comparison. For shame.
Goodbye to the sick, malicious idea that this is funny. This is not “Clinton hating,” not “Hillary hating.” This is sociopathic woman-hating. If it were about Jews, we would recognize it instantly as anti-Semitic propaganda; if about race, as KKK poison. [...] (All emphasis in original.)
If you’ve got the time, read it in full.
From the beginning, I was in favor of Kucinich. Then I heard Gravel speak and I was torn between the two as they were the only candidates to so closely align with my own politics. Now, Kucinich is out and I’m not so sure about Gravel’s future. Being left with only two choices doesn’t feel like much of a choice.
Indiana’s primary election isn’t until May, but if I’m stuck with either Clinton or Obama, my vote will go to Clinton because when compared, Obama is woefully inexperienced and we’ve got some major fucking problems.

This article caused a major furor in the comments at Pandagon yesterday. I’m genuinely shocked at the number of young feminists who sneer at the idea of voting for Clinton — and moreso, those who thought they were being targeted by the article, which clearly states it’s target as “young women” in general who don’t see the point in “first women” achievements.
True politik aside, I can’t imagine stepping into the voting booth and wondering whether this would be my last chance to ever vote for a woman president — and then throwing that away because the other guy just makes me feel good.
I have a feeling Obama is going to be around for awhile, and I don’t mind that. But *will* we get another female candidate? Are there any even in line?
I read through the comments at Feministing (as many as I could tolerate), and from how you describe the Pandagon comments, they sound alike. Although, I don’t remember anybody dismissing Clinton’s position as “First Lady” over at Feministing. I don’t think such a political position is something that ought be dismissed–just think what she’s been privy to.
I wasn’t very shocked that younger gals took personal offence to Morgan’s essay. —I wonder if some portions were not actually MEANT to offend. Perhaps some gals have identified so intensely with their candidate of choice® that any comments and/or critiques are seen as personal character assault or a testing of their True Feministiness.
I don’t know about you, but neither Clinton nor Obama makes me “feel good” and I’ve yet to find a significant distinction between the two. Besides, I shouldn’t need to “feel good” to fucking vote for somebody–we’re dealing with politics and social policy that affect our lives and the lives of others. If I were to vote based on how warm and fuzzy Candidate X makes me feel, I’d be stupid.
I doubt Clinton will be the last woman to run for president (barring catastrophe). She is the first to be this close to getting the nomination, though. As Obama has yet to convince me my vote is better spent on him, I want to see just how far Clinton can go.
don’t forget about Cynthia McKinney for the Green Party! She is being totally ignored in the media and she rocks my socks.
Thanks for directing my attention to Cynthia McKinney, Kyle! I’ll have to check her out and follow her campaign.
