I Was Only a Little Bit Worried

My parents moved us down here to West/Lafayette in the middle of the summer. Coming from the industrialized north it was something of a culture shock for me, particularly when I saw farming tractors driving on the road alongside regular traffic. I never knew Indiana had so many farms. But that summer the weather left the biggest imprint on me, as down here tornadoes are not that uncommon and the warning sirens tend to sound at least once a season. We had been here maybe a few weeks when we had a really crazy storm and the sirens went off. It was scary yet awesome. I don’t remember ever hearing any sirens up north.

The first Saturday of every month the city tests the sirens, so they sound for a few minutes starting at 11AM. When they went off a little while ago, I looked out my window and saw neither cloud nor plane. While the local newspaper is rather sucky and told me nothing, the local news channel updates their site accordingly:

I realized the sirens make me quite paranoid.

One of the sirens is right across the street from my workplace, and for about five minutes while the sirens go off, work has to stop completely because they are SO FUCKING LOUD. This is okay on Saturdays, not so much on Wednesday mornings.

I suppose the good thing is you’ll never have to worry about not hearing them if you’re stuck at work.

  3. I heard them and was a little panicked that no one else was worried about them going off when they did. Apparently it was broadcast all over the television and I looked the fool.

Usually it is quite the opposite when you do not have broadcast or cable television.

LOL, should I call and warn you guys the next time something like that is scheduled?

    Ha! Maybe!
