Work? What the hell is that?
Folks, I have a job.
I know! It’s VERY exciting. My extended vacation has come to an end and not by means of graduate school. But, I believe I’ll learn just as much through this position and it should enable me to narrow down grad school possibilities. I interviewed Friday, observed the classroom Monday, and started today. However, and this is a depressing however, “classroom” means I’ll be working with Other People’s Children. If it’s one thing you ought not blog about, it’s Other People’s Children. At least not those you work with.
This is a major bummer because I will have OUTRAGEOUS stories to tell; but alas, they cannot be for your eyes. Perhaps I can get away with snippets of conversation here and there. We’ll see. This is new territory for me—I’ve never ever worked with children, but so far my only worries concern winter and whether or not they’ll infect me with their child diseases.
Relatedly, here’s something from Taylor Mali that I’m pretty sure I’ve posted before, but you should watch it all the same as it will inspire the pants off anybody:

in the seven years that i worked with kids on a daily basis, that was the healthiest i’d ever been. i think i developed an immunity. a year or two after i left the daycare, i was catching every damn bug out there. i hated it.
as for the work stories, yeah. you gotta be careful about that. i certainly never felt comfortable writing about the families and kids that i came into contact with at the last job. some stories just aren’t ours to tell.
congratulations on the job! i hope you find it exciting and rewarding!!

That orange fizzy stuff really works. Take that.
What are you doing??? The short, anonymous version.
Start an anonymous blog maybe.
@pea: Yes, I definitely will not be posting many stories from the classroom. It’s too sensitive and as you said, they aren’t my stories to share.
@Lauren: Orange fizzy stuff? Orange soda? I don’t know any ‘orange fizzy stuff’. Water is good. Flu shots can be good.
@aaron: Like I need one more fucking website to manage. I plan on keeping a journal, offline, of my experiences. If you come up sometime (or we come down! It’s been over 20 years since I’ve been to Florida!) I can tell all.
Oh, wait. My mom told me.
That orange fizzy stuff — it’s those pil-looking herbal things that you drop in water and drink. Supposed to have been developed by a teacher. I eat those like candy during the winter months, which probably isn’t the best endorsement considering I’m always sick.
I can’t for the life of me remember what they’re called.
that’s Airborne.
they settled (lost?) a lawsuit recently for the claim that it wards off germs. i have friends who swear by the stuff but everyone still seems to get sick so I don’t know how effective the stuff really is.
And now, alas, you are infected with the child diseases. =(
