Like Candy From Strangers

On my walk with George this evening we crossed paths with an older woman walking alone. She showed an interest in George so we stopped and she pet him and cooed as folks are wont to do with dogs. “Ooh, what a cute puppy you are!” and the like.

Then she asked, “Would puppy like a rawhide?”

And that rather caught me off guard. She pulled from her other hand one of several flat rawhides. I said, “Uh, he has allergies, but thank you!”

It was the damnedest thing and I felt awful for not taking the rawhide, but a stranger was offering my dogchild candy and I got protective.

Maybe she was missing a dog she once loved and was simply looking to spread joy to a neighbor dog.

You bitter ol’ mami, Georgie needs a rawhide! Raw hiiiiiiide!

In all seriousness, I would have done the same thing. Nice lady, still weird.

It’s a sad sign of the times that this is necessary. I always operated under the ‘better safe than sorry’ motto. Just be glad your puppy can’t talk. You don’t have to hear “But I wanted the candy. Why can’t I have the candy? Can I have candy tomorrow?” for a freaking hour (if you’re lucky) after the encounter. :D

I still have a little faith in humanity and would have let her give it to him.

  4. Did she drive a van? Was it near the park? We should call the police. I thought this was the good-stock neighborhood.
